The Anchorage economy is essentially a service economy with extremely limited technical/industrial/manufacturing activity. Generally, opportunities for employment are good but tend to be affected significantly by seasonal trends. Much of the Anchorage economy is sensitive to summer tourism but most new arrivals are successful within four to six weeks when seeking position in general office clerical, banking, retail sales, and labor. Finding professional positions may take up to 12 weeks or more as opportunities are limited. Since the civilian population annual turnover (20 percent) is unusually large, military spouses may find guaranteed tour lengths a marketing asset in the local economy. Many employers actively seek to hire military spouses because of the broad base of varied experience accrued by having to find new jobs with each permanent change of station. A useful source of employment assistance is available through the local state employment service, located at 3301 Eagle Street, Anchorage, 99510. Many local employers use this office exclusively for recruiting new employees. Information on private sector jobs, unemployment insurance, veterans programs, vocational counseling, and state jobs is available. General information on services available may be obtained by calling 907-269-4800. The Job Line number is 907-269-4770. The state employment service can also assist you with information on where to write for occupations requiring certification/licensing.
